Two house on the Green have had approximately 500 litres of oil stolen from their tanks in the back garden between the start of October and the end of December. In both cases the thefts took place almost immediately AFTER a recent delivery to fill up the tanks.
This suggests that we have thieves who are possibly following tankers around until they spot a delivery in a suitably discreet location, or that they are relatively local and know the location of vulnerable tanks. Both these thefts occurred on the lane running around the back of the houses on the Green. It is debatable how effective padlocks can be in this situation as many thefts have occurred around the country where a hole is punched / drilled through the tank leaving an even worse problem of having to buy a new tank plus possibly involving the Environment Agency in clearing up the resultant oil spill.

The only other option would seem to be an all-in-one cover or an electronic audible sensor/alarm. Please everybody – keep your eyes peeled when you see a lorry delivery in the village! Is there anyone appearing to take more notice than they normally would? Anybody watching from a parked car? Has the Registration number been noted and given to Police?
