The Tywi Boat Club, also known as Clwb Cychod y Tywi, is an RYA Affiliated sailing and watersports centre situated seven miles south of the historical market town Carmarthen on the west bank of the river Tywi on the way to Llansteffan. It is approximately 2 miles from the village centre and welcomes visitors and holiday makers who may purchase temporary membership of the club for the duration of their holiday for approximately £20 per week. This will entitle all temporary members to use of all club facilities and slipways.

The Tywi Boat Club caters for enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. It is one of a number of establishments in Wales that have RYA qualified instructors who can provide facilities for people with disabilities. The Club has a full sailing programme for dinghies and cruisers. During the past few years the Club has acquired 3 Celtic Longboats and the Club now competes with the best rowing clubs in Wales and further afield, with our youngsters who appear to be winning practically every race they enter!

It must be remembered that Llansteffan is a tidal estuary with one of the biggest rise and fall of tide in the British Isles. This means you must take care especially on Spring tides. There is some wonderful sailing to be had within the Three Rivers estuaries. The Tywi is navigable for small yachts practically all the way to Carmarthen town centre, Dylan Thomas’ Laugharne is a popular destination whilst small dinghies or shallow draft motor boats can make it all the way to the ancient quay in Lower St Clears on the River Taf. To the East the newly refurbished Kidwelly quay serves to remind us of a bygone age. If you or your craft are capable, then given the right weather forecast you might like to  venture further afield on a day trip or overnight stay to destinations in Carmarthen Bay such as Saundersfoot, Tenby. or Caldey Island.

If fishing, Carmarthen Bay offers opportunities that are second to none. The previous British tope record was set here in the 70s, and during the summer months the Bay teems with tope to 50/60lb and large shoals of bass and of mackerel.

Please do remember that whether you are out for the day or for just a tide, you will have about 2 and a half hours of sailing either side of HW to ensure getting back safely to the moorings at Pilglas.

Be aware – Carmarthen Bar is a very dangerous sandbank stretching from PenTywyn point east towards Saundersfoot for approximately 2/3 miles. It would be prudent to be clear of these by at the latest 2 hrs either side of HW. If you are at all unsure about these hazards – seek local knowledge!!!!

Hi I was wondering if you gave lessons in a persons own boat?
My husband has recently purchased a 17 foot Wilson flyer and requires lessons in every area.
I look forward to hearing from you

    Kind regards Helen Harvey
